Spring season of Nebraska High School Rodeo kicks off

MCCOOK - The Spring season of the Nebraska High School Rodeo kicked off in McCook on April 24 and April 25 at the Southwest High School Rodeo. This is one of the only rodeos throughout the season that is done indoors.

On day 1, Frazier Kaelin of Broken Bow kicked off the Spring with a win in the boys cutting competitio­n. He compiled a score of 74, which was one point better than runner-up Cooper Bass of Brewster.

Not far behind the two leaders was Cody Miller of Broken Bow. He got fourth place with a score of 72.

Kaelin followed up his impressive day one performanc­e with another first-place finish on day two. This time he won the cutting competitio­n with a score of 73.

Also taking home two first-place finishes in her strong competitio­n was Madison Mills of Eddyville. On day one she won pole bending in a time of 20.361 and then cut that time down to 20.312 on day two of the competitio­n.

Brooke McCully of Mullen was second in this event on day one of the Southwest Rodeo with a time of 21.649 and Emma Pearson of Broken Bow finished third on day two in a time of 20.851.

In team roping on April 24, the team of Zane Druery of Anselmo and Gage Davis of Cody had the low time of the competitio­n with an 8.410. Dalton Garey of Broken Bow and Cauy Preitaurer of Stamford finished third in a time of 9.610.

Spencer DeNayer of Seneca showed his skill vs the wildest of horses in the bareback riding competitio­ns on both days. He won the Saturday portion of the rodeo with a score of 73 and then followed that up with a 65 to win again.

The bull riding competitio­n on Sunday was nearly won by Broken Bow’ Dalton Garey. He ended up losing by one point to Tanner Drueke of Sutherland with a score of 70.

Finishing with a time of 12.700 in tie-down roping on day two of the Southwest Rodeo was Trey Garey. That was good enough to earn him third place.

Sid Miller of Merna was not far off that pace and recorded a score of 13.600.

In girls cutting day two Broken Bow native Emma Pearson led the area cowgirls finish in third with a score of 71. Whitney Jennings of Seneca was hot in her tracks coming in seventh place with a score of 68.

Overall it was a good to start to he year for all the area cowboys and cowgirls as they try and build for the state and national competitio­ns.
