Bow native, NWU grad receives top honor

CARMEL, IND. - Theta Chi Fraternity is proud to announce Hunter N. Smith of Gamma Phi Chapter at Nebraska Wesleyan University (NWU) as the recipient of the 2021 Reginald E.F. Colley Award, Theta Chi’s most prestigiou­s collegiate honor.

Smith has been highly involved in his fraternity’s chapter. He has held chapter offices, including president, and has led fundraisin­g efforts for causes for the USO, American Cancer Society, Junior Achievemen­t and the Nebraska Strong Initiative. He has worked with the NWU dining center to deliver food to local food pantries and has also worked with Meals on Wheels and the Local United way to expand meal delivery.

Smith has also been involved on campus participat­ing with NWU’s Student Affairs Senate, NWU’s Board of Governors, NWU’s Academic Affairs Strategic Planning Committee, the baseball team, NWU’s Ambassador Team, NWU College Democrats and the Student Education Associatio­n of Nebraska.

He worked as an Admissions Department Intern all four years at NWU and spent many summers working as an electrical apprentice in his hometown of Broken Bow.

In 2019, Smith received the Summer Fulbright Scholarshi­p to study education at Queen’s University Belfast in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Smith graduated from Broken Bow High School in 2017. He graduated from NWU in the Spring of 2021 with a 3.95 grade point average with a major in history and minor in political science. He is currently teaching history and serving as an assistant football coach at Waverly High School. He plans begin work on his master’s degree in either Educationa­l Leadership/Administra­tion or in Public Policy with an education emphasis.
