Broken Bow defeats Cozad in defensive battle
BROKEN BOW - It was Parent’s Night at Mark Russell Field in Broken Bow last Friday night and the Indians took on Cozad in an important C1-7 District Game. A win would unofficially secure a playoff berth for either team as both had identical records of 5-2. In a low scoring affair, Broken Bow came out on top 12 to 6 to improve to 6-2 on the season.
Neither team was able to find the end zone in the first half. Broken Bow moved the ball and dominated the time of possession, but Cozad’s defense held strong. In the opening drive of the second half, Cozad was able to put together a scoring drive capped off with a 24-yard touchdown pass. The Indians tied the score at 6 to 6 with a 1-yard touchdown by Connor Wells.
The big break in the game came late in the fourth quarter when Cozad had a bad snap on a punt deep in their own territory. Broken Bow tackled the punter and took over the ball at the three-yard line. Cyrus Wells punched in the go ahead score with a 3-yard touchdown.
Cyrus Wells led the rushing attack with 122 yards. Broken Bow had 259 total yards compared to Cozad’s 132. Cozad ended up with a -5 yards rushing on the night.
The Bow defense pressured the quarterback all night long coming up with eight sacks. Keifer Anderson recorded three while Riese Kahnk and Sawyer Bumgarner each had two.
Broken Bow’s defense also recorded three turnovers on a Kaden McKean interception and two fumble recoveries by Riese Kahnk.
Broken Bow will finish the regular season on Friday, Oct. 22 as they travel to Minden to take on the 5-3 Whippets.
