Girls basketball team victorious

- BY MAKENNA BRUNKEN Lady Wolves Head Coach

SARGENT - Coming off of Christmas break we had a tough schedule. The Lady Wolves took three losses this week to CWC (47-28), Ansley-Litchfield (49-46), and Pleasanton (45-38).

During the CWC match-up we really struggled to get our offense going, but there was improvement in the second half when we began to drive to the basket more and began pushing harder on offensive transition. The girls were able to slow them down in the second half.

Ansley-Litchfield was a nail-biting, hard fought game. It was a tie game into the half at 23. We had a slower third quarter giving them a lead, but we came back in the 4th with 15 points, closing the gap to three.

Alexis Mauler had the hot hand this game with 19 total points. Other contributing scorers were Folkers and Ottun with 6, Beran and Barker with 5, Horky with 3 and Grint with 2. Rileigh Beran led the team with 5 steals. The Wolves had 15 total defensive rebounds, Horky leading with 5. We were also strong at the line shooting 65%.

Coming into Saturday with Pleasanton, we knew it would be a physical game. Our goal was to slow their lead scorer down. Kathryn Folkers was able to do that very well, holding Pleasanton’s Chelsea Fisher to 14. We managed to grab 13 steals, and 16 defensive rebounds. We handled their press very well, but the Bulldogs did slow down our push transition. We had a slower first half only scoring 10 points, being down by 11. Coming out of half time, we outscored Pleasanton 16-14 in the third quarter and outscored them again in the 4th 12-10. We were able to come within three points in the 4th, but we weren’t able to capitalize on some key possessions late in the 4th quarter.

Our lead scorers were Horky (14), Folkers (7), A. Mauler (6), R. Mauler (5), Beran (4), and Ottun (2). We had another good night at the free throw line shooting 86%.

We have 3 more tough matchups coming on Friday the 14th in Taylor against North Central, Monday the 17th hosting Stuart, and Tuesday the 18th we travel west to Mullen.
