Lady Indians end successful season

- BY KELLI LOOS Sports Advisor

- While most high school girls basketball teams would give anything to finish the season 22-5 with both a conference and district championship trophy on their shelf, the Lady Indians suffered what could be referred to as Heartbreak on the Hardwood to end their season.

The Broken Bow team traveled to Lincoln to face the same team they beat to win those two trophies: the Gothenburg

Swedes. It was an upset in the making from the time both teams stepped on the floor at the Devaney Center. The Swedes had come to avenge three losses to the Indians earlier in the season; to do that they would have to jump out to an early lead and keep the tenacious Broken Bow scorers in check.

Get the lead and keep it was exactly what they did and Gothenburg managed to stay ahead for the entire game. The Indians were down by as many as eleven but never gave up. Broken Bow stayed true to their game and did their best to respond to each scoring run by the Swedes.

With under 12 seconds left in the game, Halle McCaslin drained a three pointer to get within one (43-42). A foul on Gothenburg and two successful free throws put the Indians down 45-42; then Kailyn Scott was fouled. She needed to make her first shot from the line, intentionally miss her second and hope that a teammate could secure the rebound and score with under 1 second to play. Kailyn did her part but time expired before the Indians could tie the game and force it into overtime. Gothenburg had just secured the ultimate revenge - a state tournament victory over Broken Bow 45-43.

Kailyn Scott and MaKinley Tobey each had 10 points for Broken Bow. Kya Scott and Halle McCaslin added 7 each while Brianna Quinn and Joscelynn Coleman put in 5 and 4, respectively. Kya Scott pulled down 13 rebounds and played stalwart defense for the team.
