BROKEN BOW - Former Custer County resident Kevin Fink stopped by the Chief on Feb. 10 for an interview about his new book, The Badge and the Bible: A Unique Devotional.

Fink did not start as an author; he started helping on his ranch as a kid in his hometown of Ericson, Neb. He later became a Nebraska State Patrol Officer on Interstate 80 and he said he “loved it.”

Fink has a few family ties to police work. Both his father and uncle were State Patrol Officers for a number of years. Fink’s father was also the Custer County Sheriff for 12 years. Fink decided to follow in his family’s footsteps until, as he said, “the Lord showed me His plans.”

Three days after Fink was selected to be part of the Police Air Wing, he was diagnosed with a heart condition which stopped him from continuing his police career. He hit a bump in the road until he found his spirituality and started attending church services. He later became an ordained pastor and continued this line of work for a few decades. Fink always felt a sense that the Lord wanted him to introduce people to Jesus’ word. “He really had to force my hand to show me what He wanted me to do,” Fink said.

Fink spent a total of 18 days in a public library writing Unique Devotional. He uses personal police stories to lead into Biblical principles which he then applies to real life.

“I keep it very practical to relate to as many people as possible,” Fink stated. He said he focuses on the Biblical principles and the application, rather than focusing on his police stories because he wanted to focus on the reader and their relationship with the Lord. For the readers who already know Jesus, Fink would like them to walk with Him in a deeper way; for the readers who don’t, Fink said he wanted the readers to be “impacted in some way.”

Fink is currently the lead chaplain at Regional West Help Services at Scottsbluff Hospital. Fink stated he would like to continue writing along the same line as a Unique Devotional, yet focus on common life experiences instead of his own personal experiences.

Fink’s book, The Badge and the Bible: A Unique Devotional, can be found almost anywhere where books are sold including Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
