School board OKs computer purchase, supports FBLA
BROKEN BOW - The Broken Bow School board approved a $56,219.59 purchase of Chrome books for the 2023-2024 school year. Superintendent Darren Tobey said the amount was much lower than anticipated due to computers being rotated through classes.
Tobey told the board that student testing scores were good. At Monday evening’s meeting he said, “a lot of good things” have happened with test scores due to the work of both teachers and students. The elementary school broke every (testing) record,” he added. Some test levels rose more than 20 percent. Tobey will have a breakdown of the scores for the board in June.
The board voted to put $167,750 earned in interest into a CD. The board may also place extra revenue in the CD to take advantage of higher interest rates.
The board approved a request for the Anderson Grant through the Custer County Foundation for $4,000 to go toward expenses of FBLA National Convention. Sponsor Angie Palmer reported 14 students will go to Atlanta to compete at the National Future Business Leaders of America conference June 35-July 1.
The total cost of the trip is $23,560.19. Palmer said the FBLA students have already raised more than $30,000 for other projects this year and are now starting to fund raise for nationals.
At state convention, 18 FBLA students from Broken Bow qualified for nationals, however, only 14 will make the trip.
Present for Monday’s meeting were Tom Osmond, JB Atkins, Pam Holcomb, Tim Chancellor, Amy Staples and Mary Shaw. Also present were superintendent Tobey and Secretary Kay Einspahr.
The school board’s next meeting is at 6 p.m., Monday June 12.
