Custer County Chief

When things slow down ...

- BY MONA WEATHERLY Managing Editor

Do you find yourself saying, “Someday, I’ll get around to that.” If we’re lucky, we learn that “someday” never comes and we go ahead and do the things we want to do.

Instead of “someday,” I find myself saying, “When things slow down …” I have a lot of things lined up to do when things slow down.

Just like “someday,” though, things will never slow down.

The recent issues of the Chief are prime examples. May is certainly not a month to slow down, not with a dozen graduations to put in the paper, city council, school board meetings, ag society, district and state track, rodeo …

After what seemed to be a long, cold and deep-snowy winter, we are busting loose for spring.

We’re extra-busy here at the Chief. We wrapped up “Salute to Beef ” and are wrapping up the long-awaited “Progress: Community” magazine.

I hear myself saying, “When things slow down, I will pick up my wool work. When things slow down, I’ll paint the living room. When things slow down, I’ll get back to my art, I’ll paint the pie-safe and I’ll finally answer those Christmas cards.”(Yes, even in 2023, there are a handful of people I write back and forth with a couple of times a year!)

But things will never really slow down, will they? Besides, someone once told me, when things do slow down, you die. That’s grim.

Spring will slide into summer and town celebrations will start. Fair will be here before we know it. Things won’t slow down.

Regardless, I’m going to carve out chunks of time to get things done.

Here’s a question. Will Mona have her living room painted by the end of summer? Place your bets now, ladies and gentlemen and stay tuned. We’ll know by mid-September!
