Smith appointed to Bow council, Baltz elected president
The appointment of Russ Smith to the Broken
Bow City Council was approved at the council’s May 9 meeting. David Baltz was elected council president.
Smith was appointed to the East Ward seat. He has been on the DYO board for 20 years and currently serves on the city Park board and Utilities board. He said his board experience will help him on the council.
“I know the system. I think I am prepared for this,” Smith said.
Baltz has been on the council since Jan.
25, 2022. In asking for nominations, Mayor Rod Sonnichsen noted the “youth” of the council, saying board members have a total of eight years and four months experience. “Chris Myers, six years, six months,” the mayor said. “David Baltz, one year, four months. Paul Holland, six months, and Russ Smith … about three minutes.”
Custer County Emergency
Manager Mark Rempe recognized
Broken Bow Emergency Services Director Andy Holland for his assistance to the Anselmo Fire Department. “After the Cooksley Fire there was a lot going on,” Rempe said. “Anselmo had never written a report in the detail needed. He helped those guys a lot.”
Holland explained to the Chief that two main reports are the NEFIRS report which goes to the state fire marshal and FEMA and the Wild Land report which goes to the National Forest Service.
“Actually there were eight reports,” Holland said. “I walked them through it and showed them how to fill them out.” He added that last year he filed 150 reports for the Broken Bow Fire Department and so far, for 2023, has worked on 115 reports.
David Schmidt delivered his first report as City Administrator, saying there have been 15 zoning requests since mid-April. He also reported the city is in the first stages of Mud Creek Levee restoration and will work closely with the railroad. Schmidt has attended several meeting on the Creative District. “I’m truly impressed. It is
coming along,” he said.
Present for the meeting were council members Paul Holland, David Baltz, Chris Myers and Russ Smith, Mayor Rod Sonnichsen, City Administrator David Schmidt, City Clerk Kandi Peters,
City Treasurer Megan Linn and Deputy Clerk Jacob Holcomb.
The next city council meeting is Tuesday, May 23 at 6 p.m. City Offices will be closed Monday May 29 for Memorial Day.
