Foundation receives grant from BNSF Railway Foundation

- BY LINDSAY R. COOK Custer County Foundation Executive Director

The Custer County Foundation is pleased to announce it has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the BNSF Railway Foundation. These grant funds will be used to help with the Foundation’s Exterior Building Repair Project.

The building that houses the Custer County Foundation’s office is a beautiful building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It has been the home of the Foundation for over 30 years and has served us well. However, as with many historic buildings, it needs many repairs. The exterior of the Foundation building is in major need of masonry work. All terra cotta masonry on the north and east sides of the Foundation needs to be repaired. Many areas have defective joints which have missing, badly deteriorated, or broken mortar joints, just to name the major points.

Other work to be done includes sealing movement cracks, caulking all copings, sill and weatherable joints. If the Foundation doesn’t make these masonry repairs soon, the building will continue to deteriorate from the outside-in. The outside walls are at risk of cracking as moisture seeps in through open bricks and joints.

Lindsay Cook, Executive Director, stated, “We are grateful for the support from BNSF. Having the opportunity to use grants from other sources allows the Foundation to keep up on the care of critical assets, such as our historic building, without taking away from grant-making resources to our Custer County organizations.”

Andrew Tickle, the President of the Board of Directors, expressed gratitude for the generous grant provided by the BNSF Railway Foundation. “The funds will be instrumental in repairing the exterior of our building. It is crucial that we maintain the building to prevent damage from outside elements so it can be here for years to come.”

To contribute to the Exterior Building Repair Project, kindly send your donations to the Custer County Foundation at PO Box 304, Broken Bow, NE 68822, and include “Building Project” in the memo line. Thank you for your generosity.
