Custer County Chief

Kids, keep up with reading this summer!

- BY DONNIS HUEFTLEBULLOCK General Manager

BROKEN BOW - During the school year, the Custer County Chief partnered with Kid Scoop News to bring monthly papers to many of the area schools. Kid Scoop News has been a program that has run in the state of California for the past 20 years. The Nebraska Press Association made the copies available for the 2022 and 2023 school year in Nebraska. The Chief had some generous sponsors that brought the program to the area. We are currently working on 2023-2024 school year.

Statistics show children need to read for fun and, when they do so on a regular basis, their test scores are better. Summer

reading is important to each of the local communities. Please look at the crossword puzzle we have on page A2. We encourage you to get your children or grandchildren looking at the Chief for the next four weeks and fill in the puzzle. If the child gets the four puzzles to the Chief, they will receive a coupon for a Dairy Queen ice cream cone!

Here is information on some of the local reading programs this summer.

The “Reading Roundup” at the Ansley Township Library is going on Tuesdays in June from 11 a.m. to noon.

The Brenizer Library in Merna encourages all children of the area to use the library through the summer. The library keeps track of the books checked out and, at the end of the summer, they have small gifts and gift cards to award the children for reading through the summer.

The Finch Memorial Library in Arnold has programs running on June 14 and 21. They have taken a topic of sharing with the children how they can become community helpers and how important it is to help others and also grow Arnold.

Pre-schoolers through sixth grade can play BINGO at the Sargent Township Library this summer. There will be special games and activities on June 10 and 17 from 10-11 a.m. for even more fun.

At the Broken Bow

Public Library, the summer reading program is going on Tuesday through Friday. With the theme for summer of

2023, “All together now,” Librarian Megan Svoboda said, “We enjoy having a noisy, busy library! The excitement of keeping them reading, winning prizes and keeping them learning is what it is all about.”

Bottom line, reading is important for all ages. It increases your vocabulary, boosts your memory and gives you more focus.

Many summer reading programs offer incentives so children will participate. That is exactly what the Chief is doing with the Crossword puzzle on page A2. Share it with the youngsters in your family!
