Custer County Chief

Allen Eggleston

-

Milton Allen Rose Ivan Eggleston, known to most as “Allen,”passed away quietly June 8, 2023, at Quality Senior Village in Broken Bow, Neb.

Allen was born Aug. 18, 1933, to Theodore and Marie Eggleston in Callaway,. He was 89 when he passed.

Allen’s family moved around some to western Nebraska, New Mexico and Texas before moving back to Nebraska, near Oconto and finally settled at Ryno Table. The ranch there ended up being his home for the remainder of his life.

He attended school through the 10th grade before going to work for his father. Allen later worked at the Tyke Arnold elevator, the hay fields near Brownlee, cowboying at the Rizer ranch, and the alfalfa fields near Lexington.

Allen spent time in the Army, 1955-1957, serving in Germany as a driver for his commander and also patrolling the Iron Curtain. He spoke fondly of his time touring the Netherlands and traveling the Rhine River. After leaving the Army, Allen returned home to the farm, then owned by his uncle Dan Eggleston. He rented out some of the farm and began to build a cow herd while living a bachelor’s life.

Allen eventually met a young girl, Eleanor Jean Yantzie, and after many movie dates and nights of dancing, they were married July 29, 1961. To that union four children were born: Mitchell Ray (died in infancy), Leslie Jo, Mark Dale and Matthew

Wade.

When he was a teenager, Allen accepted Jesus Christ as his savior. In 1993, he recommitted his life to serving the Lord. After that time, he became active in leadership in his church, as well as teaching Sunday School and visitation at the local nursing homes.

Allen loved the farm and, in particular, the livestock, only farming enough to keep his animals. He enjoyed horse sales with his friends, riding in parades and sharing his love of riding with his kids and eventually his grandkids. He was a member of the Custer County Sheriff ’s Posse and helped with directing traffic at the county fair and helped look for missing persons with the posse.

Allen also enjoyed being a part of his community as a school board member, church board member, deacon, County Supervisor and 4-H supporter. He attended many, many events for his children and grandkids.

In his later years,

Allen was content to take care of the farm and the cattle, selling his last calf crop in 2016, and moved into a consultant role for the farm he cared for so many years.

Allen was preceded in death by his parents Ted and Marie Eggleston; brother Jim (Pat) Eggleston; sister, Elaine (Howard) Jessop; and son, Mitchell Eggleston.

Allen is survived by his wife of 61 years Jean Eggleston; children Leslie Collins, Mark (Irma) Eggleston and Matt (Shawnda) Eggleston; grandchildren Sara (Anthony) Sebastiani, Daniel (Lexi) Collins, Hanna Collins, Jeremy (Ruky) Eggleston, Jason (Kirsten) Eggleston, Manuel (Baleria) Sanchez, Jubilee Sanchez, Rachael (Shane) Luehm, Elijah Eggleston, Colten (Kylie) Eggleston, Caitlyn Eggleston,
