Devotion: Showing your loyalty

- BY KATHY SALTS PMA Our Saviour Lutheran Church

Spring is finally here, I think. One day beautiful warm weather, the next a snow day. That is spring in Nebraska.

It is so good to see the trees leafing out and flowers beginning to bloom. People decorate the outside of their homes almost as beautifully as the inside - bird feeders and baths, little ceramic statues of almost every animal imaginable and decorative flags, Husker flags, flags with pictures on them the list could go on.

One thing I noticed is that we are pretty good at displaying our loyalty to the Huskers and the Broncos, but where are the flags that show your loyalty to your Lord?

In Psalm 12 we read: “Help, O Lord, for there is no longer anyone who is godly, the faithful have disappeared from humankind.” The cry from the Psalmist seems to fit the times of today. Jeremiah cried out, “Why have your forgotten us completely? Why have you forsaken us these many days?”

I think we all feel like that at times. The fact that we are here, that we exist, means each moment God’s persisting word of power sustains us. He is loyal to us, even when we are not loyal to Him.

How are we showing our loyalty to him? Just because you hang a cross on your wall doesn’t mean you are living your life in a way pleasing to God. Hanging Christian flags outside your house doesn’t really prove that you are a Christian either. The proof is in your actions, the way you live and work that glorifies God that proves you are a Christian.

Yes, it would be great to see some Christian decorations along with the Husker flags, but most importantly we need to love others as God loves us, without discriminating against them.

Are you up to the challenge? It will not be easy, but then God never promised it would be, but He did promise it would be worth it in the end!
