Fund raising begins for inclusive playground for children of all abilities

BROKEN BOW - It brings a parent or grandparent the most joy when they see a child of theirs play and have fun on a playground.

For children who have a physical handicap, many playgrounds are not equipped for them to enjoy, they simply have to stay on the sidelines and watch.

A group of concerned parents are leading the charge to get inclusive playground equipment at North Park Elementary School with their goal to have it open to the public.

The vision of the group is to create a playground that is accessible to children of all abilities. That means a child who only knows a wheel chair will be able to swing or slide, for example. For some children, playing on the playground would be good physical therapy to build strength.

Chelsey Hueftle is one of the parent organizers. “Adding on to the existing playground at North Park is something I’m very excited about for my boys, with one that has physical disabilities,” she said. “It is very hard for us to find a safe playground where my oldest son can safely play and enjoy without leaving in tears because he can’t do what the other kids are doing.”

She acknowledges that the project can be costly but it’s about helping children.

“Whether it’s swings or stairs to the top slide for the ‘big’ kids, or just a safer surface to walk on, I know it can be a very expensive project, but I have faith in our small-town community to help all of our littles thrive and grow to be happy, healthy kids,” she said. “They can be shown that their community loves and supports all types of people and encouraged to enjoy life to the fullest no matter what your disability may or may not be.”

To kick off fund raising, there will be a “Fun Run” the last day of school, May 16 at 1:30 p.m. The public can direct questions to Jessica. gibbons@bbps.org.

Donations are being directed to the Custer County Foundation with North Park Playground in the memo.
