Big performances light up scoreboards

It was a night of big performances across the South Bay football landscape Friday. Here is a look:

North Torrance sophomore quarterback Trevor Lagarde threw eight touchdowns with no interceptions in the Saxons’ 71-2 Pioneer League win over Torrance.

Lagarde joins seven other players to have thrown for eight touchdowns. The single-game record is nine.

Inglewood’s Justyn Martin also threw eight touchdowns as the Sentinels routed Muir 70-14 at the Rose Bowl. On the defensive side of the ball, Charles Deloach recorded six sacks as the Sentinels improved to 3-0.

Last season, Inglewood’s Jared Heywood tied the single-game record of nine touchdowns.

Banning started its season with a 40-14 win over Kennedy. Jakob Galloway gained 227 total yards with five touchdowns and Emilio Villarreal rushed for 192 yards and a touchdown.

Serra remains undefeated in league

The Cavaliers improved to 4-0 in the Mission League with Friday’s 3817 win over Bishop Amat.

Elijah Davis rushed for two touchdowns and Maalik Murphy had two (one passing and one rushing). The win for Serra was the first over Bishop Amat since 2016.

Next up, Serra will face Alemany. The Cavaliers have won six consecutive meetings against the Warriors.

First win for Manumaleuna

Brandon Manumaleuna picked up the first victory of his coaching career with Leuzinger’s 67-0 over Morningside on Friday.

Erik Amos Jr. had an interception, receiving touchdown and a punt return for a score. Ashley Tucker and Ruben Rodriguez had two rushing touchdowns apiece, Kevante Henry had two sacks and Lettington Brown returned an interception for a score.

The Olympians will certainly be a team to watch in the summer, heading into next fall.

Early look at next week

It is the final week of the Southern Section schedule and the rivalries will highlight the night: Palos Verdes-Peninsula, Mira Costa-Redondo, Leuzinger-Hawthorne, Inglewood-Morningside.

Next week is also week 2 of the City Section schedule: Banning-Carson highlights the night. Narbonne visits San Pedro in its first game under Malcolm Manuel and Westchester host Hamilton in Western League action.

Our first football Top 10 will be out on Monday. Serra will be No. 1. That’s the only freebie I’m giving you.

Looking ahead to a fall Top 10, and as of now, I would say that Serra and Lawndale would be the early contenders for No. 1, with Inglewood and St. Bernard also in the mix.
