Parents and students will encounter safety measures, special procedures
After a year of remote learning, in-person instruction is set to begin rolling out this week in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
The youngest students will return first, with Monday a day for teachers and staff only and Tuesday
the first day for kindergartners and first graders.
Sixty-one elementary schools and 11 early education centers will lead the way with middle and high schools following on April 26.
Protocols will be in place, including social distancing and mask requirements.
And children will be required to get a free coronavirus test before returning to campus. Twenty-five testing sites located throughout the district can be found at achieve.lausd.net/covidtestingappt/.
Testing then will be provided once a week at school sites.
The district also will transition its pandemic food-relief efforts back to a school-based meal program focused on children.
Here are some of the guidelines parents and students will encounter as campuses reopen.
CORONAVIRUS SAFETY MEASURES
• Desks will be placed 6 feet apart in all classrooms.
• Masks for students and staff are mandatory, along with practicing social distancing.
• Markers and plexiglass dividers will be in place and sanitizer stations will be available at all schools.
• Improved air filters are in place on all campuses.
• Students must answer screening questions at school entrances or provide updates through the district’s Daily Pass app to ensure they are free of symptoms.
• Restrooms and hightouch surfaces will be disinfected hourly.
GETTING BACK ON CAMPUS
• The easiest way to return is by using the Daily Pass app. Information can be found at https://achieve .lausd.net/dailypass/

• Playground equipment will be restricted, but children will still be able to play outside in socially distanced activities.
• Students can still bring backpacks to school.
• In-person instruction for elementary schools will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
DISTANCE LEARNING
• Families can opt to keep students in online education through the rest of this school year, which ends on June 11.
• They also can change that option by providing two weeks’ notice at their children’s particular school.
