Mira Costa, Redondo, Torrance resume volleyball playoffs

The 2020 Mira Costa boys volleyball team didn’t get a chance to compete for a CIF Southern Section title after the season was shut down due to the coronaviru­s pandemic.

The Mustangs, who advanced to the 2019 Division 1 final, will officially kick off the 2021 playoffs today.

Mira Costa, the second seed in the Division 1 bracket, will host Orange Lutheran in a first-round match at 6 p.m. If the Mustangs advance, they will host either Corona del Mar or Mater Dei on Saturday in the semifinals.

In the top half of the bracket, Redondo is the eighth seed and will be on the road at No. 1 seed Loyola.

The final is set for June 5. In Division 4, Torrance has advanced to the quarterfin­als and will host Warren at 6 p.m. Torrance swept Ontario Christian in the first round and defeated California in four sets in the second round.

CIF-SS basketball updates

The Rolling Hills Prep girls basketball team will host St. Anthony at Chadwick High on Thursday at 7 p.m.

The Peninsula girls basketball team’s Division 1 game against Brentwood is Thursday at 6 p.m.

The start time for the Mira Costa boys basketball team’s Division 2AA game at Westlake has been moved to today at 5 p.m.

at Morningsid­e; Ayala at El Segundo; Lakewood at Lawndale; Wiseburn Da Vinci at Bell Gardens; and Katella at Hawthorne.

PV boys tennis advances

Top-seeded Palos Verdes defeated San Marino 12-6 in a CIF Southern Section Division 1 quarterfin­al match Monday.

The Sea Kings will visit Loyola in the semifinals today at 3 p.m.

Gardena girls soccer advances to final

The fourth-seeded Gardena girls soccer team will face second-seeded Sun Valley Magnet on Thursday at 3 p.m. in the CIF L.A. City Section Division IV championsh­ip game.

The Panthers opened the playoffs with a 6-0 win over East Valley on May 18 in the quarterfin­als. They followed that with a 3-2 win over top-seeded GALA in the semifinals May 20.
