San Pedro routs Banning, advances to semis
San Pedro scored five runs in the second inning and eight in the third on the way to a 14-0 mercy-rule win Saturday over Marine League rival Banning in the CIF L.A. City Section baseball quarterfinals.
The Pirates’ pitching trio of Zach Geiss, Humberto Maltos and Matt Borges combined to allow just three hits.
At the plate, Mike Brucelas, Dylan Kordic and Anthony Orozco had two hits apiece and Jake Harper drove in four runs. Kordic and Dominic Porter had two RBIs apiece.
The Pirates will host No. 8 seed and three-time defending city champion Birmingham in the semifinals on Wednesday.
Birmingham upset top-seeded
Granada Hills Charter 9-2 on Friday.
The other semifinal will feature No. 2 Cleveland hosting No. 11 El Camino Real.
The final is Saturday, June 19. The Pirates visited the Patriots on April 24 and lost 7-6 in 10 innings.
In 2019, San Pedro was the No. 1 seed in the Open Division and lost in the first round to Birmingham.
Carson advances to semifinals
Carson, the No. 8 seed in the City Section’s Division I baseball playoffs, upset top-seeded Poly 2-0 in the quarterfinals Friday.
Miles Hughes allowed five hits in six innings and struck out seven. Mike Barber pitched the seventh for the save.
Joseph McEwen drove in both runs for the Colts.
Carson will play at Taft in
Wednesday’s semifinal.
CIF-SS site updates
Palos Verdes will be at home in its CIF Southern Section Division 3 baseball semifinal against Arlington on Tuesday.
In Division 5, North Torrance will visit Cajon in the semifinals.
The finals will be played Friday (at Long Beach State) and June 19 (Cal State Fullerton).
