Juneteenth, June 19, is a Black American holiday to remember the day when word finally came in 1865to slaves in Galveston, Texas, that slavery had been ended by President Abraham Lincoln’s Jan. 1, 1863 Emancipati­on Proclamati­on.

The annual celebratio­n, also known as Jubilee Day, Freedom Day and African American Independen­ce Day, is celebrated with family and community gettogethe­rs, eating red-colored foods, like red velvet cake and strawberry soda, and sharing family history, music, singing and stories.

Here’s a sampling of in-person and online Los Angeles County and also, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.

Juneteenth Freedom Day: Event kicks off with a “Freedom Day Walk,” 9-10:30a.m. June 19 (see details about the walk on the registrati­on page). Following the walk, the celebratio­n continues with a health resource fair, guest speakers on the importance of Juneteenth, panel discussion­s, entertainm­ent by J.J. Fad and DJ Arabian Prince and community dancing until 2 p.m. Bring your own blanket or lawn chair. Ellen Garrison Clark — Celebratio­n of Her Civil Rights Activism and a Gravestone Unveiling: The Altadena Historical Society honors Juneteenth by rememberin­g the civil rights work and teaching career of Ms. Clark (April 14, 1823-Dec. 21, 1892), 11 a.m. June 19. She was buried in an unmarked grave at Mountain View Cemetery in Altadena. The society and the local Black community will be unveiling a headstone on her grave during the program. Black Arts Los Angeles’ Juneteenth Heritage Festival — Virtual Event: The online event includes discussion­s, entertainm­ent and virtual vendors, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. June 19. Scheduled speakers and topics include: “Financial Freedom,” with LAren A Clark, from City National Bank, 11:30a.m.; “Social Justice: Where Do We Go from Here?
