Angels muster no offense in another loss to Oakland.

ANAHEIM >> Before the Angels’ 4-0 loss to the Oakland A’s on Thursday night in the final game before the trade deadline, manager Joe Maddon spoke in optimistic terms about how anything can happen with two months to play.

He remembered how the

Rays overcame one.

The 2021 Angels, though, have so far shown no indication of being able to put together the kind of extended hot streak needed to overcome such a deficit to get into the playoffs, at least not with so many key players on the injured list.

An offense without injured Mike Trout, Jared Walsh and Anthony Rendon came up empty against Frankie Montas, so the Angels couldn’t overcome a bad first inning by spot starter Dylan Bundy.

The loss was the 10th in 13 games this season against the A’s, who are currently six games ahead of the Angels for the second American League wild-card spot. That is even more daunting than it sounds, because there are four other teams sandwiched between the Angels and A’s.

The Angels are 51-51 with 60 games to play, seemingly likely to sell off players like relief pitcher Raisel Iglesias or starter Alex Cobb before today’s deadline.

Bundy got the start because Cobb is still nursing a blister that developed during his previous start last weekend. It was the first opportunity for Bundy to start since his time in the rotation ended with a forgettable — or memorable — June 30 start at Yankee Stadium.

In that game, Bundy became ill with heat exhaustion on a humid night in the Bronx and vomited on the field in the second inning.

This time started off pretty badly, too.

Bundy hit leadoff hitter Mark Canha and then walked Starling Marte and Matt Olson to load the bases. A run scored on a groundout and two more on a double by Ramon Laureano.

After that, though, Bundy got into a groove and he didn’t allow anything else through 4-1/3 innings.
