The week was a costly one in the Serra football quarterback room.

On Thursday, the junior varsity quarterback went down with a broken femur. On Friday, varsity QB Maalik Murphy left the game against Warren early with what has been ruled a right shoulder injury, and CJ Myles replaced him and he ended the night with a concussion.

Friday’s 14-0 loss to Warren, ended with running back Kai Honda running the Wildcat offense.

Also, Jason Mitchell, who played quarterback as a freshman at St. Bernard, has been playing defensive back for the Cavaliers, but he has a cast on a broken left hand.

“It’s been bizarre,” Serra coach Scott Altenberg said.

Serra is set to face Carson next Friday.

“This is something I’ve never seen,” Altenberg said. “We’ve always had the next guy and the next guy, but with the injuries, we don’t, so we have to be creative and figure it out. It’s Saturday and I’m still trying to figure out what I’m going to do.”

The news regarding Murphy, Altenberg said is good.

“There’s no tear, no broken bones,” he said. “He’s really sore ... but there’s no (bone) breaks so that’s good news and the best case scenario.”

After Friday’s game against Carson, Serra will get a bye before starting Mission League play, Oct. 1. Altenberg said that will also give them an “opportunity to assess where we’re at.”

Cavs defense shows up

The Cavaliers’ game against Warren was billed as a showdown of two of the state’s top quarterbacks in Murphy and Warren’s Nico Iamaleava.

It ended up being a defensive struggle, ending in a 14-0 Warren win.

“We had five defensive starters out before the game,” Altenberg said. “We went into the
