Heyward makes his return to Wrigley Field as a visitor
CHICAGO >> Even after the Chicago Cubs released him with one year remaining on his eight-year, $184 million contract, putting his baseball future very much in doubt, Jason Heyward knew he would see Wrigley Field again.
“Well, I'm a resident so I knew at some point, God willing, I would see Wrigley again,” Heyward said, sitting in the visitor's dugout there on Thursday afternoon. “That might have been walking the dogs out here in the outfield. But, no, it's really cool to be able to do that as an outfielder for the Dodgers.
“Just going to enjoy it, every bit of it. You never know when it'll be your last time.”
The end of his time as a Cub didn't cut Heyward's ties to Chicago. He maintains his home here and opened the Jason Heyward Baseball Academy on the west side of Chicago earlier this year. He plans to visit the facility for underserved youth today.
And, of course, Heyward's ties to Chicago will always be strong as a member of the Cubs' only World Series championship team in the past 114 years. That team was broken up soon after the 2016 title and Heyward was asked if it was strange to see so many of his World Series teammates scattered to the baseball winds.
