Mira Costa takes second at Durango Fall Classic
The Mira Costa girls volleyball team advanced to the finals of the Durango Fall Classic in Las Vegas on Saturday, but fell to a familiar opponent, Mater Dei.
The Mustangs, the overall top seed, won the first set in the finals, but lost the next two and the match. The final score was 18-25, 25-20, 25-21, as Mater Dei avenged a three-set loss to Mira Costa in August.
Mira Costa's Charlie Fuerbringer, Audrey Flanagan and Taylor Deckert were selected to the all-tournament team.
The Mustangs swept their pool Friday matches and defeated Bishop Alemany (25-6, 27-29, 2517) to advance to the Championship Division.
In the playoff bracket, Mira Costa swept Huntington Beach (25-17, 25-20) and Cathedral Catholic (25-17, 25-19) to advance to the final.
Redondo, the No. 12 seed, also swept its three opponents in
Pool 12. However, the Sea Hawks dropped their match in the qualifying round against Prestonwood Christian, sending them to the Silver Division. Redondo lost to Lone Peak and defeated Torrey Pines before losing to Saint Francis in the fifth-place match.
Torrance went 1-2 on the first day Friday in Pool 13. Saturday, Torrance lost its first match in the Classic Qualifying Round, sending the Tartars to the Contender Division. Torrance defeated Kamehameha (25-20, 25-15), Centennial (25-16, 25-15) and Bakersfield Christian (25-18, 25-22) to finish as the division champion.
South went 2-1 in Pool 11 Friday. The Spartans went to the Bronze Division and went 0-2, losing to Bishop Gorman and Faith Lutheran.
In the tournament's final standings: Mira Costa finished second, Redondo was 14th, South was tied for 23rd, and Torrance was 41st in the 64-team field.
Redondo visits Mira Costa on today at approximately 6:30 p.m. in Bay League action.
