Longshot Wynstock wins the Los Alamitos Futurity

- By Art Wilson Correspondent

Trainer Bob Baffert having three of the five horses in a graded-stakes race that he's now won a record 14 times and eight of the past 10 runnings is like spotting the 1927 Yankees three games in a best-of-7 series.

Talk about your sure things. Baffert had the 4-5 favorite in Saturday's $200,000 Grade II Los Alamitos Futurity, Coach Prime, and Wine Me Up, the 9-5 second choice. He also sent out 13-1 longshot Wynstock, owned by Los Alamitos owner Dr. Ed Allred and the track's vice president, Jack Liebau.

At the finish, it was Wynstock who collected first prize of $120,000, surviving a stewards' inquiry to secure his second consecutive victory after breaking his maiden at identical 13-1 odds at Santa Anita on Oct. 15. He beat Stronghold by a half length after the two colts played a little game of bumper cars in the last eighth of a mile.

Ridden by Kyle Frey, Wynstock won for the second time in four starts and padded his career earnings to $162,740. He ran the mile and one sixteenth in 1:43.53, surrendering the lead midway through the stretch only to re-rally and earn the victory.

“Stronghold got us first,” Frey said of the bumping that prompted the inquiry.

Baffert said he's had high hopes for Wynstock, a son of Solomini,

since the beginning. He ran him short twice. He finished fourth, beaten 7 1/4 lengths in his debut at Del Mar on Aug. 25 and came back to run fifth, beaten 10 3/4 lengths on Sept. 30 at Santa Anita. He stretched out to a mile in his third start, going gate to wire for a 7 1/2-length victory with Frey aboard for the first time.

“I couldn't believe he got beat twice going short because he had shown so much in the morning,” Baffert said. “When he went long we put Kyle on him and he got him away from there and I told him I'd leave him on this horse because they get along great together.

“Coming into the paddock today he looked outstanding. He was on his toes and actually looked like he was going to run in the Champion of Champions (quarter-horse stakes). He's a stout, beautiful horse.”

Baffert got his start in the quarter-horse business. He was one of the top trainers at Los Alamitos

before switching to thoroughbreds full time in 1991. The rest is history, but the Hall of Fame trainer still holds fond memories of the Orange County track.

“I'm just really happy for Doc (Allred),” Baffert said. “We go way back. To have this moment is special. He bought (Wynstock) and trusted me. I'm so excited.”

Said Frey, who registered his first gradedstakes victory in Southern California, of the winner: “He has the heart of a lion. He swelled up when (Stronghold) came up on our inside.”

Coach Prime, ridden by Flavien Prat, went in off an impressive 7 1/4-length maiden victory on Nov. 10 at Del Mar, but the Quality Road colt never threatend in the stretch Saturday. He had to settle for third, a half length behind Stronghold.

“He was sort of in and out the whole way,” Baffert said. “He got a little warm behind the gate and got shuffled back a bit. He's still green.”
