South Torrance's Garriott wins his second tourney

South Torrance freshman Caden Garriott won his division at the Joe Rios Memorial boys wrestling tournament Saturday in Chico.

Garriott (116 pounds) started the tournament with three victories by fall. He wrapped up the tournament with a 13-7 decision over Tobey Forman of Spanish Springs.

Garriott went into the tournament ranked 29th in the state.

Garriott was also first at the Downey Invitation­al. He had third-place finishes at the South Torrance Spartan Kickoff and the Mann Classic, and he was fourth at the Tournament of Champions.

“He's made the semifinal in every tournament,” said South coach Don Garriott, Caden's dad. “He's been around it (wrestling) his whole life and he thrives in the chaos. He wants the spotlight.”

South's Jacob Kerekes finished sixth at the Joe Rios Memorial.

North Torrance sixth in tournament

North finished sixth in the John Enriquez Memorial tournament hosted by John Glenn High. The Saxons recorded 146 points.

Anthony Garcia (113) and Micah Britfeld (190) both placed third in their weight class. Mason Barros-Santiago (120) was fifth, Quentin Barros-Santiago (106) was sixth and Gavin Tsukiyama (150) placed seventh.

San Pedro had two medalists with Lorenzo Reyes placing third at 106 and Miguel Sandoval finishing fourth at 138.

Peninsula's Miles Miller (106) and Aaron Herbert (157) were eighth in their respective weight classes, Efosa Osayande (165) and Roberto Villanueva (190) were both sixth.

Lawndale's Kobe Dean (132) and Nick Yllescas (157) were eighth and seventh, respective­ly.

Mira Costa's Alastar McRae (157) won his weight class. He won by major decision and four by fall, including in the final. Teammates Elias Beniflah (175) and Dominic Simola (165) were third and eighth, respective­ly. McRae is 37th in the state individual rankings.

Girls

Torrance's Olivia Schafer (140) and Tora Altersten (145) finished fifth and third, respective­ly, at the Enter the Jungle Tournament hosted by Ontario High.

Mira Costa's Ruby Dominguez (130) was second at the Richard D. Madrid Memorial at San Dimas.

Redondo's Kinsey Konrad was first in the 170-pound class at the Western High Lady Pioneer Challenge.

Sophia Sanchez (120) and Faith Bree (125) finished fifth and third, respective­ly. San Pedro had a pair of medalists: Priscilla Monson was second at 140 and Alexa Calleja was fifth at 130. South's Oceanna Yeung (105) and Banning's Melissa Guerrero (170) were third in their weight classes.
