Mira Costa, Palos Verdes set for Bay League showdowns

The first big Bay League boys and girls soccer games of the season are set for today.

The Mira Costa and Palos Verdes boys and girls teams are all 2-0 and will face off against each other.

The winner of today's games will take over sole possession of first place in the Bay League.

The Mira Costa boys (151-2, 2-0) defeated Peninsula 4-0 Monday, led by Jack Johnstone's hat trick.

The Palos Verdes boys (7-6, 2-0) also recorded a 4-0 win, defeating Santa Monica. William Corry and Peter Chang scored two goals apiece.

Today's boys game starts at 3:30 p.m. at Mira Costa.

The Mira Costa girls (90-2, 2-0) defeated Peninsula 3-0 on Monday. Juju Arensdorf, Amanda McKendry and Halle Ostboe scored, and McKendry, Fiona Shin and Sydney Bushman recorded assists.

The Palos Verdes girls (9-1-1, 2-0) defeated Santa Monica 2-0 Monday. Gemma Pappas and Lane Flanagan each scored, and

Flanagan also had an assist.

The Palos Verdes girls will host Mira Costa today at 3:15 p.m.

CIF-SS Open Division

Mira Costa, South Torrance and Animo Leadership are on the watch list for the CIF Southern Section Open Division playoffs.

The Mustangs and Spartans are ranked fourth and seventh, respective­ly, in this week's Division 1 poll. The Aztec Eagles are the topranked team in Division 3.

On the girls side, Mira Costa and Redondo are on the watch list for the Open Division playoff bracket.

Mira Costa is ranked seventh in Division 1. Palos Verdes, which defeated Redondo last week, is not on the watch list this week, but is ranked 10th Division 1.

Torrance girls undefeated in league

The Torrance girls soccer team improved to 5-0 in the Pioneer League with Monday's 1-0 overtime win over West. Kaya Herndon scored the winning goal.

Torrance will visit South on Friday.
