Six local teams advance in regionals

Six basketball teams from the South Bay area survived the first round of the CIF Southern California regional playoffs.

Bishop Montgomery's girls team had a first-round bye and will join the six in action in today's second round.

Here is a recap of Tuesday's action and a look at today's games:

Girls

PALOS VERDES 61, PALISADES 58 >> The Sea Kings, who won the CIF Southern Section Division 4A championsh­ip, knocked off the third-seeded Dolphins in Division III.

Maddie Farnsworth scored 24 points and Quinn Tamashiro scored 22 points. Farnsworth also had eight rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Palos Verdes (25-7) will be at No. 9 Rancho Bernardo for today's game. Rancho Bernardo defeated Torrance 48-46 Tuesday.

BANNING 37, ST. PIUS X-ST. MATTHIAS 31 >> Melony Bernabe had 15 points for the Pilots (17-10) in the Division V win.

Banning, the seventh seed, will be on the road against No. 2 Savanna today.

Also in Division V, La Mirada defeated Gardena 55-35.

In Division I, top-seeded Bishop Montgomery will host Corona Santiago today. Santiago defeated Westcheste­r 62-54 in the first round.

Boys

SAN PEDRO 77, RIVERSIDE NOTRE DAME 60 >> The top-seeded Pirates

(22-11) won their Division V playoffs opener.

Noah Simpson scored 18 points, had 12 rebounds and seven assists. AJ Bobich had 14 points and hit four 3-pointers. Nate Cigar, Elias Mitchell and Ricky Alonso scored 10 points apiece. Chim Emegwa contribute­d nine points.

San Pedro will host No. 8 Firebaugh today.

Also in Division V, Buckley defeated Carson 77-60.

WESTCHESTE­R 68, CASTAIC 56 >> Khaeden Grady-Asher had 29 points and 12 rebounds to lead the fifth-seeded Comets (20-8) to a win in Division IV.

Westcheste­r will host No. 13 Washington Prep in the second round today. Washington defeated Westcheste­r 56-45 when the teams met Jan. 3.

Also in Division IV, El Segundo lost to Cleveland 74-50.

REDONDO 84, SAN DIEGO MONTGOMERY 69 >> The 13th-seeded Sea Hawks (25-5) received balanced scoring in their Division I win.

SJ Madison scored 25 points, Devin Ringer added 19 points and Hudson Mayes contribute­d 18.

Redondo will be at No. 12 Damien today.

ROLLING HILLS PREP 41, JSERRA 39 >> The 15th-seeded Huskies (276) knocked off the second-seeded Lions in Division I.

Mateo Trujillo scored 12 points and Nick Welch Jr. scored 11 for RHP, which will be at No. 7 Sherman Oaks Notre Dame today.

In Division III, Thousand Oaks defeated Serra 73-53.

The regional semifinals are Saturday and the finals are Tuesday.
