There weren't many surprises in the Super Tuesday balloting

There weren't too many surprises in Super Tuesday's primary election on the federal, local and state scenes. Joe Biden and Donald Trump will be duking it out for the second time, and Joe won't have the luxury of basement campaigning this cycle. It might be possible for Steve Garvey to actually defeat Adam Schiff in November, even though Schiff outspent Garvey by a wide margin in the primary. There hasn't been a GOP senator in California for several years. Garvey may appear to be an aw-shucks lowkey type of emerging candidate, but beneath that exterior might lurk a steely ambition to succeed. He must have had a determined focus to succeed in baseball for many years. If he runs a good campaign, all bets are off. Breaking the Democratic monopoly could be good for the nation and state.

Super Tuesday's biggest takeaways in the state

The biggest take is that political power seems to be independent of age and objective meritocracy with two very elderly men, past their prime, getting the most votes. Also, it was a disappointing outcome for Nikki Haley and Katie Porter in their campaigns, and bad timing for able but older Barbara Lee. Haley was denied an opportunity to try to rise to the stature of Golda Meir, Margaret

Thatcher, Angela Merkel and Indira Gandhi. Can Dodger Blue Garvey upset Schiff? Only if the Dodgers win the World Series in November. Sadly, over half of the voters were conned into voting for Prop. 1, which will be a very expensive nonsolution to the state and world problem of people unable to pay for housing. Finally, I hope the number of honest dedicated candidates elected will exceed the morally compromised elected ones.

Voting on Super Tuesday

For those of us who voted in person, it was extremely wellorganized. Our voting site was well-monitored with booths kept private and well-lit. A big thank you is due to the voting volunteers who helped to make it an easy and accurate process. — Isadora Johnson,
