Red Sox's Story likely done for the season

-

Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story will have what is likely seasonending surgery on his dislocated left shoulder and right-hander Nick Pivetta has a strained a right flexor.

Story, a two-time NL All-Star while with the Colorado Rockies, was placed on the 10-day injured list after injuring his shoulder Friday against the Angels. Projected recovery time is six months.

Pivetta was put on the 15-day IL. Story's injury occurred when he hit the ground hard while making a backhand stop on Mike Trout's single in the fourth inning. Story writhed in pain after landing with most of his body weight on his shoulder.

The 31-year-old Story, in the third season of a $140 million, six-year contract, was hitting .226 with four RBIs in eight games. He is a .265 hitter with 177 homers and 534 RBIs over nine major league seasons but has a .227 average and .681 OPS in two-plus seasons with the Red Sox. He was limited to 94 games in 2022 by a bruised right hand sustained when hit by a pitch from Tampa's Corey Kluber and bruised left heel, and to 43 games last year, when he had surgery in January to repair a torn UCL and didn't make his season debut until Aug. 8.

Pivetta (1-1, 0.82 ERA) has made two starts this season, allowing one run and eight hits over 11 innings with 13 strikeouts. Last season he was 10-9 with a 4.04 ERA.

Mets' Martinez not yet ready

All-Star J.D. Martinez was given a shot on Tuesday to address lower back tightness that has delayed his debut with the New York Mets.

Martinez has been working at the team's facility in Port St. Lucie, Florida, after signing a $12 million, oneyear contract on March 24. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Martinez, 36, experienced similar lower back soreness following spring training last season with the Dodgers and added “he's feeling it again.”

“Last year in April he dealt with it, got a shot in April and was back seven days later,” Mendoza said. ”

Martinez hit .271 with 33 home runs and 103 RBIs in 2023 with the Dodgers and is expected to serve as the Mets' primary designated hitter.

• Mets right-hander Julio Teheran was designated for assignment, one day after he lasted only 2 2/3 innings in his debut with the team.

Teheran, 33, gave up four runs in Monday night's 8-7 win over Atlanta. Teheran signed with New York on Friday. He began his career with Atlanta in 2011 and was an All-Star with the Braves in 2014 and 2016.

Teheran spent spring training with the Baltimore Orioles but opted out of his minor league deal in late March. He was 3-5 with a 4.40 ERA in 11 starts and three relief appearances last year for Milwaukee.

Nationals lose pitcher Gray

Washington Nationals opening day starter Josiah Gray went on the 15-day injured list with a right elbow and forearm problem.

Gray, a right-hander who was an NL All-Star last season, is 0-2 with a 14.04 ERA so far in 2024.

In his most recent appearance, a 7-4 loss to Pittsburgh, Gray departed after 4 1/3 innings. He allowed six runs, seven hits and three walks.

Gray is 17-27 with a 4.84 ERA in the majors. The Nationals acquired him as part of the trade in July 2021 that sent Max Scherzer and Trea Turner to the Dodgers.
