The top four seeds in the Class 4A state softball tournament all survived through Thursday’s quarterfinals, and among them, Northern Colorado Athletic Conference standouts Mead and Holy Family will make up half the teams to invade the Aurora Sports Park on Saturday morning looking to close out fantastic seasons.

A quick look at the local results:

No. 4 Mead 7, No. 5 Riverdale Ridge 1: Claire Adams knocked in four of Mead’s seven runs, Adams and Emily Sauvegeau each had three hits, and pitcher Joslynn Veltien held RRHS to just two hits to give Mead its first semifinals berth in program history. The Mavericks wasted no time getting on the board as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead, then slowly added on with Adams’ two-run double in the sixth a decisive blow for the visitors.

Mead (16-2) will play No. 1 seed Wheat Ridge (17-1) in the semifinals at 10 a.m. for the chance to play in the 1 p.m. championship game. Wheat Ridge has shut out each of its first two opponents in the playoffs.

No. 3 Holy Family 3, No. 6 Silver Creek 1: The games got cleaner each time down the line as Holy Family and Silver Creek played three times this season, but when all the chips were down, Cassidy Chvatal of Holy Family came up with the biggest pitches at the right time to out-duel the ubertalented Maddie Kuehl. The Tigers also were flawless in the field, which helped make a two-run first inning for HFHS hold up as what all would have been needed to win.

In the first, base hits from Tyler Whitlock, Ava Kuszak and Chvatal led to the pair of runs.

Jordan Fisher had a runscoring single for Silver Creek, who also got nine strikeouts from Kuehl in the game. Holy Family will play No. 2 seeded D’evelyn Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m.
