Don’t cut education funding
As the November election rapidly approaches, we urge you to vote “no” on Proposition 116, a millionaire’s tax cut that would reduce already depleted spending on public services by $125 million. In the middle of a recession, this measure is dangerously irresponsible.
As Colorado students, we are particularly concerned about the cuts to education that Prop 116 would initiate if passed. The education funding system in Colorado is already deeply flawed and severely inadequate. In fact, we rank last in the nation for providing teachers with competitive wages, and we spend about $2,700 less per student than the national average. Millionaires do not need a tax cut, and schools across the state cannot handle another funding cut.
Due to the challenges posed by COVID19, this year Colorado has already cut $3.3 billion across the budget, and K-12 education alone has seen a $572.4 million cut. Every child should have access to high quality education, no matter where they live, how much money their families make, or the color of their skin. But in order to make this a reality, our schools need funding.
Continuing to cut the taxes of the wealthy in Colorado will leave a multitude of programs underfunded. It’s not just our education system that will suffer if Prop 116 passes, but other vital services as well.
