‘A hope and a vote’

-

The Oct. 24 guest column in the Daily Camera on voter suppression provided a great rundown on the damage done by the court in its 2013 Shelby County v Holder decision. That Republicans have gone about dismantling a crucial part of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 with such immediate and brazen actions targeting minorities and students shows just how much we’re still a Jim Crow nation.

With the election of Donald Trump and the rise of white supremacists and Qanon followers, I’ve got to admit to some surprise at just how little we’ve advanced from the failure of Reconstruction around 1876. And the disclosure of attacks against Black men and women by some police highlights the abiding racism that only needed iphone videos and a nudge from a self-serving president and a cynical GOP to show itself.

It’s a hard, anxious time we’re in. Even the political divisions and violence of the Vietnam era can’t compare to this. I’m really glad my cop days were finished more than 20 years ago.

And I really appreciate this clear account by D.R. Mayer of how the vote is being undermined now.

I’ve got some hope that enough courageous people will defy the barriers and their votes will be enough to clear out Trump and the GOP senate. A hope and a vote.

Our very traditions are being ripped away in the name of corporate greed. It’s time to boycott Apple. Boycott Amazon, Google, Facebook, and Netflix. Boycott everything. Start the revolution.

Good grief, I look into my 2020 Halloween bag and all I see are rocks.
