Black History Month celebration set

The Executive Committee for African American Cultural Events will host an inaugural Black Histor y Month Boulder County Celebration.

The vir tual event will begin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, according to a news release. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Under the direction of Modern Icon Media’s Trenton Hoshiko, this year’s production is set to premiere worldwide via Youtube, according to the release.

Jhasmyne CooperMoore, executive assistant and special projects manager for the committee, said the committee is a Longmont-based programming organization founded on engaging the community through education, tribute, celebration, solidarity and ser vice.

The release said the celebration will recognize the past, present and future of Black histor y, and reflect on countless contributions from members of the African American community.

During the event, Boulder City Councilwoman Junie Joseph will speak on Black Histor y Month education. Other par ticipants include Rev. Nathaniel Black and a special presentation by the Withers’ Photography Collection. During the celebration, Charleszine “Terry” Nelson, the special collection and community resource manager for the Blair-caldwell African American Research Library and Warren Washington, an atmospheric and climate scientist, will be recognized with lifetime achievement awards.

The event organizers said the celebration will seek to foster hope and inspire action.
