Put plans into action on housing

-

Congratulations to Boulder city leaders for passing the new Racial Equity Plan. Now it’s time to put these aspirations into action.

Fortunately, Boulder’s Planning Board will have the oppor tunity to do that at its March 4 meeting when they will decide whether to approve a proposed housing community in East Boulder.

As the plan properly states, “The high cost of housing in Boulder creates a growing economic divide within the community.” For the 1 in 5 households in Boulder who identify as “not white,” this is an understatement. The report goes on to note that, “we must work together to accomplish scalable change to a system that, for too long, has continued to cause so much harm.”

Addressing racial equity and supporting our communities of color begins with a simple question: What are we actively doing now to enable our communities of color to afford to live here?

It’s time to stop harming our community’s ability to build housing that promotes diversity, inclusion and resiliency. More singlefamily homes or exclusionar y zoning isn’t the answer. It’s time to live up to the values that we aspire to, especially around equity and justice.

It’s time to support projects like the one at 5801 Arapahoe Ave. that are specifically aimed at promoting this diversity and equity.

Boulder’s Planning

Board will decide at its virtual March 4 meeting whether Boulder will walk the walk.

If this is impor tant to you, please show up (vir tually) and help us make this our reality.
