Biden calls Boulder Mayor Sam Weaver with condolences

- By Deborah Swearingen Staff Writer

Boulder Mayor Sam Weaver announced Wednesday that he received a call from President Joe Biden following a mass shooting on Monday at the King Soopers on Table Mesa Drive where 10 people were killed by a gunman.

“The President was clearly pained by our losses, and offered any resources we need,” Weav- er wrote on

Twitter.

It’s not the first statement the president has made regarding what happened Monday in Boulder. Biden gave a speech on Tuesday where he again expressed his condolences to the community and to the families and loved ones of those lost in the shooting. He also pushed for federal legislation.

“We can ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines in this country once again. I got that done when I was a senator. It passed. It was law for the longest time, and it brought down these mass killings. We should do it again,” Biden said on Tuesday.

Weaver said he told the president that Boulder’s main focus right now is on the victims and supporting their families and that he didn’t think there was much to be done on a federal level in that regard. However, he said his conversation later shifted toward gun reform. Biden told the mayor that he’s considering a number of solutions, both through the executive branch as well as legislation passed through Congress.

“Of course, looking forward down the road, we are really interested in federal legislation along the lines of what he talked about,” Weaver said by phone.

“He’s been committed to this for a long time, and you could hear the passion in his voice for the subject,” he added. “He says that each one of these are very difficult, and he’s hoping that, of course, … this will be the catalyst that will get something done.”

The mayor heard Biden mention in his press conference that he intended to call the mayor of Boulder so he’d been prepared for the conversation. More than anything, Weaver said he was appreciative that “the pain going on here is seen and reflected on.”
