Two weekend cycling events to affect rural traffic

Two cycling events in rural Boulder County this weekend, the Harvest Moon Triathlon on Saturday and the Buffalo Bicycle Classic on Sunday, will affect traffic, county officials advised in a news release.

Both events have road closures, but most roads used for both events will remain open to all users, according to county staff.

The Harvest Moon Triathlon near Boulder Reservoir will start at 7:30 a.m.

Saturday with the cyclists entering the road at approximat­ely 7:50 a.m. Riders will be single file and spread out, with the last cyclists leaving Boulder Reservoir at approximat­ely 9 a.m.

All cyclists are be off the road by 2 p.m. A sweep vehicle will follow the last cyclists and alert the police and course marshals along the way so that traffic can return to normal as soon as possible.

Westbound Jay Road will be closed from Colo. 119/ Diagonal Highway to 51st

Street. from 6:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. All other roads on the bike course, including eastbound Jay Road from 51st Street to Colo. 119, will remain open throughout the race. Course maps and other informatio­n about the Harvest Moon Triathlon can be viewed at tinyurl.com/ vujbc5yn.

On Sunday, the westbound lane of Colo. 119 in Boulder Canyon is to be closed to non-emergency vehicles from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. for the Buffalo Bicycle Classic, a University of Colorado Boulder scholarshi­p fundraisin­g bike ride.

The eastbound lane of Boulder Canyon and all other roads used will remain open throughout the event.

County officials said westbound Boulder Canyon traffic may detour to

Nederland and the Peak to Peak Highway during the closure by using Lefthand Canyon Drive, Coal Creek Canyon, or Sunshine Canyon Drive/gold Hill Road. County officials advised in their news release that people traveling through the areas during either event should pay close attention to the Boulder County Sheriff, Colorado State Patrol, and the volunteer traffic marshals who will be helping to ensure safety for riders and travelers alike.

When passing a bicyclist, motorists must allow at least three feet of space between their vehicle and a bicyclist. To pass a bicyclist safely, drivers may cross a double yellow center line when oncoming traffic is clear.
