Lyons’ six-game win streak snapped
Skyview Academy holds off hot Lions
LYONS >> Despite the seemingly lopsided result Monday night, the veteran lineup of the Lyons girls basketball team showed they have more left in the tank.
Visiting Skyview Academy eventually proved too much to handle for the Lions, who just couldn’t muster enough offense to overcome a 24-8 halftime deficit in what turned into a 46-32 final.
Coming into the game, the Lions were on a sixgame win streak after starting the season 3-6. Despite the loss, which put them at 9-7 overall and 4-3 in Mile High League play, head coach Marcus Richardson didn’t believe Monday’s outcome to be any type of setback.
“We still played really well,” an upbeat Richardson said, his team now fifth in the 12-team MHL. “Defensively, we really played a good game, especially limiting their two best players as best we could. Our target was to score 40 and limit them and we just couldn’t quite reach that scoring threshold.”
Turnovers and a trying time on offense to get first-half baskets to go in were the main catalysts behind the Lions’ inability to get back into the game. A 6-0 run to start the third quarter half gave the team some hope, and LHS did outscore the Hawks 24-22 in the second half. But it was too little, too late.
“The bad first quarter there cost us — only putting up two points,” Richardson said. “When we figured out how to attack them in the third and fourth quarter was a little bit too late, especially in a girls’ game where it’s tough to come back from an early double-digit deficit.”
The Lions’ leading scorer was senior point guard Brooklyn Enny, who dropped 14 points and was a stabilizing force in the second half. Starting in a lineup with her four senior teammates, Enny said the team is ready to build on their performance with just a handful of regularseason games left leading into district play.
“It was good to see how we match up with a team like that and gives us things to work on for future games,” Enny said. “Friday is senior night so we’re really looking forward to that, especially us five as a group.”
Kylee Roberts pitched in six points for the Lions. She also brought a ton of energy to the defensive end and helped keep the Hawks (8-6, 4-4) from completely running away with the game.
“It was kind of rough at the beginning,” Roberts admitted. “But we all played as a team, and I love seeing us all play together and work together. It’s not just a one-man game for us. I love this team. It’s my last season, but the team we have is incredible, and I love working with all of them. I am looking forward to finishing the year-out string with them.”
With senior night on the horizon Friday against Gilpin County, elevated emotions will be front and center for the final three regular season games. With that, though, comes the motivation to go out with a bang.
