Colorado point guard Jaylyn Sherrod knew the importance of Friday’s game against Washington State and she took it upon herself to put the Buffaloes on her back that night and lead them to an important victory.

On Monday, Sherrod was rewarded for her stellar weekend by being named the Pac-12 women’s basketball player of the week.

It is the first player of the week honor of the season for the 21st-ranked Buffs and the second career weekly award for Sherrod. She earned player of the week honors on Jan. 10, 2022.

During CU’S sweep of the Washington schools last weekend, Sherrod averaged 17.5 points, 4.0 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals, while hitting 13-of-18 shots (72.2%) from the floor and 8-of-9 (88.9%) from the free throw line.

Sherrod scored 15 of her career-high-tying 27 points in the fourth quarter of a 71-68 come-from-behind victory against Washington State.

The Buffs trailed by nine going into the fourth and Sherrod sealed the win by going 4-for-4 at the free throw line in the final 24 seconds.

“I just got some motivation,” she said on the Pac12 Network after that game. “My team really feeds of my energy and I know we needed that. I thought we came out a little flat; flatter than we normally do at least. I just knew I had to come out here and do my job and that’s to bring the energy, and whether that’s scoring or defensively I just have to do my job.”

Sherrod had eight points and six assists in Sunday’s 65-43 rout of Washington.

For the season, Sherrod is averaging 11.0 points, 5.2 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 2.4 steals per game. She leads the Pac-12 in assists and steals.

This is just the seventh player of the week honor for CU since it joined the Pac-12 in the 2011-12 season. Sherrod joins Chucky Jeffery as the only Buffs to be honored more than once. Jeffery earned player of the week honors once in 2011-12 and twice in 2012-13.
