On the Line: The Richard Williams Story

U.S. FEATURE DOCUMENTARY, 2022, 90 MINUTES >> Tennis was historically an upper-class sport and a fixture of lily-white country club culture. The Williamses were the ultimate outliers. They burst onto the scene with phenomenal fanfare, anticipation and some skepticism — but Venus and Serena had the grit and raw talent to back up the hype. Fierce competitors on the court, the siblings remained consummate professionals despite enduring criticism and ugly rumors that reeked of racism. Through exclusive interviews with Richard Williams and rare home movies, this documentary is an illuminating portrait of a family that forged a path for future competitors of color while revolutionizing the sport of tennis. Filmmakers Stuart Mcclave and Chavoita Lesane in will appear in person; 5 p.m. Saturday, Boulder High School.

The film is directed by two-time Oscar nominee Stephen Frears (“The Queen”) and stars twotime Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins (“The Shape of Water”) as Langley. It also stars Steve Coogan, Harry Lloyd and Mark Addy; 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Boulder High School.
