Boulder Municipal Court Judge Linda Cooke announced Monday that she will resign from her role effective June 30.

A news release stated that Cooke, who has been with the city and court for 22 years, said she is hoping to devote more time to her family and personal life, but that she is still interested in serving in a parttime role, if possible. During Cooke’s time on the bench, according to the release, Boulder has developed programs, such as the Community Court and court navigators program, that “seek to resolve the root causes that lead to court violations.”

“I embark on this transition with profound gratitude,” Cooke stated in the release. “The opportunities afforded to me in this role, and the many friendships and collegial relationships I have developed, will always be with me. I am confident that the many talented and dedicated court colleagues will continue to champion the principles of procedural justice that I’ve worked to instill.”

Mayor Aaron Brockett stated in the release that Cooke has been an “impassioned and collaborative leader” for the court.

“I appreciate the way (Cooke) has always looked holistically at the cases that have come before her,” Brockett stated in the release. “She’s been a trusted partner in upholding our municipal code and helping our City Council understand issues that impact our community. I am deeply grateful for her service.”

The municipal judge position, which is appointed by City Council, reports directly to the council. Councilmembers are expected to schedule a time to discuss next steps in the hiring process.
