Domi scores shootout winner to lift Maple Leafs over Flames

TORONTO >> Max Domi scored in the fifth round of the shootout and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Calgary Flames 5-4 on Friday night.

William Nylander had two goals and an assist, and John Tavares and Calle Jarnkrok also scored for Toronto, which has won two of three. Joseph Woll made 24 saves.

Nylander extended his franchise-record point streak to open a season to 14 games.

Connor Zary, Nikita Zadorov, A.J. Greer and Martin Pospisil had goals as Calgary snapped a two-game win streak. Mackenzie Weegar added two assists and Dan Vladar stopped 32 shots.

Domi scored the deciding goal in the shootout upstairs on Vladar before Woll denied Dillon Dube to secure the extra point in the standings. Calgary’s Yegor Sharangovi­ch and Toronto’s Mitch Marner scored earlier in the tiebreaker. PANTHERS 5, HURRICANES 2

Matthew Tkachuk, Aleksander Barkov and Carter Verhaeghe each had a goal and an assist, and the Florida Panthers topped the Carolina Hurricanes 5-2 on Friday night in a rematch of last season’s Eastern Conference finals.

Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 28 shots on the way to winning his fourth consecutiv­e start. Rookie Uvis Balinskis got his first NHL goal for Florida, and Kevin Stenlund added an empty-netter with 3:42 left for the Panthers.

Sam Reinhart had two assists for Florida.

But of late, Panthers-hurricanes games always seem to go Florida’s way. Carolina won 11 of 13 meetings between the teams, one of those in a shootout, between Nov. 23, 2018, and April 22, 2021. Jeff Skinner and JJ Peterka each had a goal and an assist, and the Buffalo Sabres beat the Minnesota Wild 3-2 on Friday night.

Devon Levi made 31 saves. The Sabres won for the fourth time in six games (41-1).

Kirill Kaprizov and Joel Eriksson Ek scored for the Wild, and Filip Gustavsson stopped 22 shots. Minnesota has lost six of eight (2-5-1).

Jared Spurgeon nearly forced overtime in the game’s final moments, firing a shot off the post with 10 seconds remaining.

Skinner gave the Sabres a 2-1 lead with 58 seconds left in the second period, scoring on a breakaway. After the Sabres were dominated for much of the period, Skinner went to his forehand to score his seventh goal of the season. Peterka set up the breakaway by forcing a turnover.

CAPTIALS 4, DEVILS 2

Nicolas Aube-kubel and Beck Malenstyn scored 15 seconds apart in the first period, and Evgeny Kuznetsov had two goals as the Washington Capitals beat the New Jersey Devils 4-2 on Friday night.

Tom Wilson had two assists and Charlie Lindgren made 24 saves as Washington won for the fifth time in seven games 5-1-1.

Timo Meier and Dawson Mercer scored for New Jersey, which lost for the third time in four games. Vitek Vanecek gave up two goals on five shots before he was replaced by Akira Schmid midway through the first period. Schmid finished with 18 saves.

Aube-kubel, recalled from AHL Hershey earlier Friday to make his season debut, got the Capitals on the scoreboard first 10:22 into the game.
