A man who was arrested following a hit-and-run crash in Boulder on Saturday told police he was asleep at the wheel during the collision.

Jordy Lopez, 21, is facing charges of vehicular assault — reckless; hit and run — serious bodily injury; violating an instruction permit or temporary license; harming a vulnerable road user; careless driving; and tampering with physical evidence.

Lopez is currently in custody on a $10,000 bond and is set to next appear in court on Thursday for his formal filing of charges. According to court records, Lopez has no criminal history in Colorado.

According to the affidavit, police were called to 30th Street and Valmont Road at 8:32 a.m. Saturday regarding a hit and run crash. Police stated that when they arrived they found a woman lying in the roadway on westbound Valmont Road with severe road rash, head lacerations, missing teeth and “legs spread further than what a normal person would be able to do” — indicating a broken bone or torn muscles.

AMR then arrived on scene, and the woman was transported to the hospital with serious bodily injury.

Police determined through their investigation that the vehicle that hit the woman left the interior westbound lane on Valmont Road and entered the bicycle lane, hit the woman and then dragged her under the car for approximately 200 feet. According to the affidavit, the woman was then released from under the truck and run over by two other vehicles’ tires.

Using traffic cameras, police then identified the suspect vehicle as a GMC Sierra registered to Lopez. From there, the officer tracked down the phone number of Lopez, who confirmed he was in Boulder that morning and would be returning later.

Police then spoke with Lopez when he returned home, and he told them he hit something with his truck that morning and believed it was a kind of pole but wasn’t sure as he was asleep when the incident occurred.

Lopez said he considered going back to the scene after the crash to check what he hit but never did. Lopez said his truck broke down shortly after the crash due to the damage that he was aware he only had an instruction permit, and that he was planning to take his driving test soon.
