Student wins big in Lions Speakers contest
Students spoke about homeless solutions
Luke Ask, a junior at Woodland Christian High School, won the local Woodland Yolo Sunset Lions Club Student Speakers contest in mid-February and then kept right on winning.
Ask also won the Lions Gordon Zone contest held March 5 before all further in person speaker contests were postponed because of COVID-19.
In June, Ask was asked to prepare a written presentation of his speech for judging at the Dos Rios Region competition which he also won.
The Region winners then moved to the District level competition and were asked to put together a YouTube video by July 18. Ask’s YouTube video won both the District and Area 1 contests.
Ask’s YouTube presentation was one of four to compete in the Multiple District 4 State Speakers Contest at the Virtual Council of Governors meeting on Aug 23.
The winner of this year’s Student Speakers Contest was Halle Schaffer, Area 4, District 4-L6, who was sponsored by the Encinitas Lions Club.
District Governor Cat Gon Wrote. “Our own Luke Ask, District 4-C5, Dos Rios Region, sponsored by Woodland Yolo Sunset Lions Club, Student Speakers Contest winner representing Area 1, made us all so very proud for his speech to combat and alleviate Homelessness in California.”
Ask was awarded over $11,000 in scholarships by the Lions District 4-C5 and Multiple District 4 Speakers Foundation Inc, for his winning presentations.
In 2018, Woodland Christian High School Student Kory Parsons who represented the Woodland Reveille Lions Club also competed in the Multiple District 4 State Speakers Contest. She spoke about “Civility and Integrity in Society.”
