The city of Woodland is now offering up its 2021 summer recreation slate of activities, with most programs are set to start on Monday, June 21.

Although there will still be restrictions on some activities, the fact that they are ongoing and scheduled is a huge step toward normalcy this summer.

The Woodland Community & Senior Center — located at 2001 East St. — is ready for a partial reopening set for Monday, June 21, after the facility shut down its doors nearly a year and a half ago, on March 18, 2020. The center lobby will be partially open for customer service and senior information from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

Daily drop-in athletic activities will be taking place. For example, badminton will run on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, pickleball will take place on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. In addition, open gym basketball, a huge attraction at the center, will be open daily from noon to 4 p.m.

Other programs, including many senior programs like yoga or Rock Steady Boxing, will begin in the building over the next few weeks.

However, since many programs are not ready to begin at this time, the center will experience a soft reopening.

“I’m proud of my fellow Californians for enduring the isolation for over a year,” said Community Services Program Manager Dallas Tringali. “My heart hurts for all of our senior center users because this was part of their social circle as much as it was a personal resource. I’m excited to get friends back in the same room, to show movies again, to eat together again, and to hear the buzz of enjoyment that echoed throughout the center.”

This past Monday, the Community Services Department kicked off summer programs with about 150 youth attending the Summertime Fun Club and Summer Teen Pack. These 9-week programs are held at Crawford, Ferns, Woodside, and Pioneer Parks. Week-long sports camps also began on Monday, and they will be held at the Sports Park.

Summer at City Hall will also commence for three weeks, starting on Monday at Pioneer High School with about 25 participants. According to Tringali, the Community Services Department utilizes about 75 temporary employees and 10 volunteers to run the summer programs, most of which are teenagers.

“Summer at City Hall saw a huge spike in participation,” Tringali said. “In its first two years, they had a handful of students. Now that’s jumped up to 25. This is a great opportunity to introduce civic government as a career opportunity.”

Charles Brooks Community Swim Center — located at 155 N West St. — has been on a strict schedule for most of this past year due to COVID-19 restrictions, will partially reopen starting Monday, June 21 through Aug. 6.

From Monday through Friday, free public swim will take place from 1:15 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. Capacity, however, will be limited due to social distancing guidelines.

Swimming lessons will take place over four different sessions, two in the morning and two in the afternoon. You can sign up through the city’s website at cityofwoodland.org/csd. Session one runs from June 21 through July 1, session two runs from July 5-15, session three goes from July 19-29, and the final session will go from Aug. 2-12.
