The Acme Theater Company in Davis is set to perform a free, boisterous adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice” this Memorial Day weekend.

Based on the novel by Jane Austen, the performance will showcase two casts performing on alternating evenings. The comedy begins in Regency England at the country home of the Bennet family where Mrs. Bennet has dragged her husbands into her battle to wed her four daughters — outspoken Lizzy, kind Jane, gothic Mary and flighty Lydia.

Heroine Lydia is determined to never marry, but as her “war of wit” with Mr. Darcy escalates, her family drama begins to spin out of control.

“This adaptation distills what we love about Austen and brings a fun, new rhythm to the story,” said director Emily Henderson in a press release.

Performances are set to take place May 2730 at 7 p.m. at the Davis Arts Center Outdoor Stage, located at 1919 F St. Audience members are invited and encouraged to bring their own blanket or lawn chair. For the safety of the community, all audience members are required to wear a mask when not actively eating or drinking and show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test within the last 72 hours.
