California Hawking Club's falconry in speaker series
The Center for Land-Based Learning's California Farm Academy Speakers Series is returning every third Wednesday from March through October bringing together innovators and thought leaders to share their insights for the next generation of agricultural and environmental stewards.
The free speaker series will kick off next Wednesday, March 20, with the California Hawking Club teaching people how to use falconry to deter crop pests. The event will feature pizza and refreshments from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and a discussion and demonstration from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the center located at 40140 Best Ranch Road in Woodland.
“Our guests train raptors to hunt rabbits and other crop pests,” the center's press release stated regarding the event. “Join us for a close-up look at these impressive birds of prey, learn about the ancient sport of falconry and watch the hawks in action.”
April's speaker series will delve into Korean Natural Farming to discover the power of indigenous microbes to grow healthy plants.
“These gatherings provide a lively and informal opportunity to connect in person with CLBL students and alumni and engage with partners and agriculturalists from across the region,” the release added. “We hope you'll register and join us.”

• The third annual Yolo Youth and Young Adult Job and Community Resource Fair will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, March 29 at the Woodland Community and Senior Center located at 2001 East St.
“This event is held in partnership with the city of Woodland and YoloWorks,” the event's website noted.
Attendees will have the opportunity to connect with employers and local resources including YoloWorks!, Yolo County Children's Alliance, Yolo County Office of Education, Pride Industries, SAFE Credit Union and more.

• Woodland's summer recreation program exposition, “REXPO,” and Senior Art Show will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Woodland Community & Senior Center Friday, welcoming attendees to learn about the programs offered by the city and its recreation partners.
The event was created by the city's community services department. Anyone who registers for one of its programs or activities during the event will receive a 10% discount and a chance to win prizes, according to a city press release.
“Discover the recreational activities in Woodland including Summertime Fun Club, swim lessons (sponsored by Kiwanis Club of Woodland), Summer Teen Pack, tennis lessons, boxing, fitness classes, special events, seasonal job openings and volunteer opportunities,” the release stated. “`Camperships,' (scholarships for qualifying families) are available for Summertime Fun Club, Summer Teen Pack, swim lessons and the Woodland Wreckers swim team.”
Furthermore, the senior art show will include artwork by local artists including those who participate in classes held at the community and senior center.
“Artwork includes paintings, drawings, ceramics, needlework, quilting and wood carvings,” the release added. “Some artwork may be for sale. As part of the event ambiance, enjoy beer and wine tasting supplied by Simas Family Vineyards and Blue Note Brewery. Additional donations for the event have been provided by Senior Center Inc.”

• The Woodland Winefest returns Saturday, May 11 and will be held at Heritage Plaza at 701 Main St.
The “intimate gathering featuring local boutique wineries and breweries” was created to benefit Soroptimist International of Woodland, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering women through education and programs to help them achieve economic equality, according to the event's Facebook page.
“We're so excited to be back on the Heritage Plaza in downtown Woodland,” the page stressed. “This year we're expanding the space giing us more room and adding more wineries and breweries. Additionally, we are adding a food truck this year so you can buy snacks and stroll through the event.”
Live music, a silent auction and wine raffle will be available during the evnet.
Wineries and breweries that will be in attendance include Matchbook Winery, Great Bear Vineyards, Corkwood Cellars and Blue Note Brewery.

• The Woodland Farmers Market's Paint and Sip event supporting its kids farmers market for the 2024 season is returning in April.
The 1 p.m. Saturday, April 27 event will be held at The HIVE, located at 1221 Harter Ave. Tickets for the event are $55 and include art supplies and instruction, one drink ticket for alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages and “guaranteed fun for a great cause,” according to the market's Facebook post.
“We can only sell 50 tickets and we sold out last year,” the post warned. “The HIVE is a great venue so come join us.”
