What causes this chaos?

Dear Editor: In response to the recent fatal shooting in Newburgh, I have come to the conclusion that community education is necessary. Street violence has to stop.

Unfortunately, this goal cannot and will not be achieved without serious action from our local governments, as well as our state and federal governments. I agree with Mayer Judy Kennedy who said, “Whatever we should do to get more (police) reinforcements to take care of the current problems and we have also got to do something to get to the heart of what is driving all of this.”

This brings me to the question, what is driving this chaos?

Newburgh, of course, is not the only city in America where street violence is taking place; it is everywhere. But, this could be one less city involved more in keeping the peace than being the resting ground to another victim, especially those who are innocent locals.

I perceive Tomas Almodovar (the victim in the shooting) to be another innocent local citizen who was only in the wrong place at the wrong time. This poor man leaves behind a family which is hurting from this unexpected and unpredictable loss. Stories like these place fear in my heart because this can happen to anyone.

My heart goes out to the family and friends of all fatalities due to street violence. We can only hope and pray that one day these casualties can be a thing of the past.
