PALENVILLE — Doug Smith, 83, of Palenville, died Sept. 28, 2012, after a short illness. Doug spent his final days at his home, where he was surrounded by his loving family and friends.

Doug was born on Oct. 16, 1928, in Schenectady, to the late Archibald and Hazel Stanbrough Smith. His family relocated to Palenville when he was a young child. Doug, who was predeceased by his brother, Jack, on Aug. 31, 2005, grew up in the mountains of Palenville, where the two of them (along with their lifelong friend Keith Roberts) became three of the most sought after sportsmen in the area. Their knowledge of hunting, fishing, golfing, and just life in general, has been passed down to many generations. Their legacies will live on in all of us forever.

Doug served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960 and was a member of the American Legion Post 1804. He enjoyed over 30 years of retirement from the N.Y.S. Department of Corrections, where he served as a corrections officer and for 25 years as a weapons instructor.

Doug is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Yolanda (Sanson) Smith; two sons, Douglas Smith and his wife, Sandy, and David Smith and his wife, Nancy; two daughters, Donna Karch and her husband, John, and Debra Stanbrough and her husband, Cliff; 14 grandchildren; 15 greatgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews that he loved dearly.

Friends and relatives are invited to call to Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home at 139 Jefferson Heights in Catskill on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Private cremation will be conducted at the Albany Rural Crematorium, with a memorial service being held on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, at 10 a.m. in the Gloria Dei Episcopal Church in Palenville.
