SAUGERTIES — Richard J. Underhill Jr., 85, of Elm Street, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012, at the Ten Broeck Commons Health Facility.

Born March 28, 1927, in Saugerties, he was the son of the late Richard J. Sr. and Jennie Akaduski Underhill.

A lifetime area resident, he was employed at Alpha Cement Company for 32 years, retiring in 1982. He then was employed by the Lezette Bus Transit as a school bus driver.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he was a former member of the Saugerties American Legion and the Knights of Columbus, as a 3rd Degree Knight. He was a parishione­r of St. Mary of the Snow and served 10 years on the Saugerties Village Board. As a life member, Mr. Underhill was a very active in the Saugerties Fire Department and the Exempt Firemen’s Associatio­n, holding the title of fire commission­er. He was also chairman of the Aerial Ladder Company.

He was predecease­d by his wife, Juanita E., in 2003, and grandchild, Lea Jade.

Survivors include his two daughters, Dacia and Rebecca of Saugerties; six grandchild­ren, Damion, Richard, Cassandra, Rachael, and Rebecca; and five great-grandchild­ren, Cameron, Gianna, Greyson, Nico, and Caleb.

His funeral procession will form at 9:15 a.m. Thursday at SeamonWils­ey Funeral Home, Inc., corner of John and Lafayette streets. Thence to St. Mary of the Snow Church, where at 10 a.m., a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered. Friends will be received Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will follow in the St. Mary of The Snow Church Cemetery.
