Gulian T. “Chick” Hook II, 76, of Forrest Drive, Port Ewen, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side Friday evening, July 15th, 2016.

Chick was born on Dec. 20, 1939, a son of the late Gulian and Marjorie Hook.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from SUNY Maritime at Fort Schuyler. He was then employed with the United Fruit Company and traveled the world. In 1994, Chick retired as a teacher with the Kingston City School District at Miller Jr. High School.

Chick made his home in Red Hook and along with some good friends, he lived an adventurou­s and unique life. After retirement, Chick hiked the Appalachia­n Trail, The Adirondack Mountains and local trails.

Chick loved to tinker, listen to National Public Radio, and his morning coffee and hard roll brought to him every day by Tom. Chick’s weekends spent in Sundown are treasured memories for those he knew there. In the end, Chick had lots of love and care from Samantha and her family, which includes many dear and thoughtful friends and their children.

Chick is survived by his dear friends, Thomas and Emily Gorsuch of Red Hook, Bonnie Barringer of Sundown, and Samantha Amato and John Farella, their children John and Sophia, and Debra Plutino, all of whom were cherished as family by Grandpa Chick.

Cremation service arrangemen­ts for Chick are private under the care of the Gilpatric-VanVliet Funeral Home, 339 Broadway, Ulster Park. Cremation held at Wiltwyck Crematory.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributi­ons in Chick’s memory to: Alzheimers Associatio­n Hudson Valley, 2 Jefferson St. #103, Poughkeeps­ie, N.Y. 12601.
